LS Lowdown: 📜 The typo that named our town…

Hey Lee’s Summit! Here’s what’s happening this week!

Welcome back to the Lee’s Summit Lowdown! I’m so glad you’re here.

  • 📦 History Lesson: How a misspelled boxcar gave us our name.

  • 🏠 Rental Update: Why City Hall is holding firm on Airbnbs.

  • 🎙️ Student Spotlight: Our local VFW’s Missouri state winner.

  • 🏗️ The $778M Plan: What’s on the city’s 5-year infrastructure roadmap.

  • 📅 The Lineup: Your social calendar for March 1-8.

📜 The Misspelled Milestone: How We Became “Lee’s Summit”

A railroad error that accidentally became our identity.
Did you know that back in 1865, our beloved city was officially platted as the “Town of Strother”? Founder William B. Howard named it after his wife’s maiden name, but let’s just say the “Strother Lowdown” doesn’t have quite the same ring to it.
Locals and railroad crews already had a different name in mind. Since the town sat at the highest point on the Pacific Railroad line between St. Louis and KC, it was naturally nicknamed “Summit.” Meanwhile, railroad crews used the farm of Dr. Pleasant Lea as their base camp and decided to honor him by naming the stop “Lea’s Summit.”
The Twist: In a quirky bit of historical fate, the railroad crew reportedly painted “Lee’s Summit” (with two E’s!) onto the side of a donated boxcar that served as the town’s first depot. By 1868, the residents officially petitioned to drop “Strother” and embrace the misspelled tribute, cementing our name – typo and all – into the history books.

🏠 The Airbnb “No” and the World Cup

City Hall is holding the line on short-term rentals.

While neighbors loosen rules for 2026 World Cup crowds, Lee’s Summit is staying firm. Despite local pleas to host fans, the City Council declined to expand current ordinances.

The Rules:

  • 📍 Location: STRs limited to “Old Town” or parcels >1 acre.

  • 🏠 Presence: Owners must live on or adjacent to the property.

  • 🚫 Why? To prevent “party houses,” noise, and parking congestion.

The Plan: With 650+ hotel rooms available and two more hotels under construction, the city is betting on professional lodging over residential rentals to handle the influx.

🎙️ A Voice for Democracy: Jackson Shrum

A Lee’s Summit student heads to the national stage.
A huge shoutout is in order for Jackson Shrum, who was just named the Missouri State Winner for the VFW’s “Voice of Democracy” audio-essay contest!
Representing our very own VFW Post 5789, Jackson’s essay on democratic themes beat out thousands of students from across the state. He’s now headed to the national stage to compete for a share of $1.9 million in scholarships. It’s a massive win for Jackson and a proud moment for our local VFW – we’ll be rooting for him in the national finals!

What happened while you were living your life last week.

City Hall: A $778 Million Roadmap

The City Council had a busy night balancing the budget and neighborhood vibes:

🤝 Kensington Farms “Yes”: After neighbors protested last fall, the developer pivoted. Council approved Phase 1: 235 single-family homes, a clubhouse, and trails – no apartments included.

🏦 Bank of America Glow-Up: The 1980s branch near Summit Woods is being leveled for a sleek, modern facility with improved landscaping.

✂️ UDO Speed-Up: New rules are in the works to fast-track minor builds and “red tape” revisions. A final vote is set for March 10.

🍲 March for Meals: Mayor Baird officially proclaimed March 2026 as “March for Meals Month,” honoring volunteers delivering 700+ weekly meals to our seniors.

LSR7 School Board: Savings & Safely Overachieving

The Board met Thursday with some major wins for the district’s “piggy bank”:

🏗️ Construction Coupons: The new Greenwood Elementary contract came in $4.3M under budget. By “copy-pasting” that design for the new Hazel Grove Elementary, the district saved another $1M in fees.

❤️ Heart Safe Certified: We are officially a “Heart Safe School” district, hitting state safety requirements well ahead of schedule.

🏆 National Champs: Congrats to Lee’s Summit West Cheer – they dodged a Dallas ice storm to bring home two national titles!

🚍 Operations Update: The Board approved two new safety SUVs (with durable leather seats for student transport) and essential roofing/casework upgrades at LS Elementary, Summit Lakes, and Prairie View.

✍️ Help Me Shape the Lowdown

Nominations Open: I want to highlight the people you care about. Use our new Community Nomination Form to tell me which local business or neighbor I should feature next!

Between $778 million in new projects and the debate over short-term rentals, the “New Lee’s Summit” is taking shape fast. My goal is to keep the Lowdown focused on what actually matters to your commute and your kitchen table.

I have one question for you: What is the one thing happening in your neighborhood that people aren’t talking about enough? Whether it’s a construction mystery or a local hero who deserves a shoutout, reply to this email and help me set the agenda for next week. I’m all ears (and usually looking for an excuse to go grab another snack downtown)!

Thanks for being part of the Lowdown crew!
