Hey Lee’s Summit! Here’s what’s happening this week!

Welcome back to the Lee’s Summit Lowdown! I’m so glad you’re here. They don’t call LS a ‘Boomtown’ for nothing! From historic deep dives to modern-day budget crunches and a very literal ‘Blue Box’ downtown, we are covering the full spectrum of Lee’s Summit life today. Grab your coffee (or your energy drink of choice) and let’s get caught up on everything happening in our neck of the woods.

🏗️ From Depot Town to Boomtown

Lee’s Summit started as a tiny 11-block railroad stop, but now it’s a massive community of 100,000 people. Kansas City Magazine just put out a great piece on our history. It shows how we went from a steam engine depot to a suburban powerhouse while keeping that neighborly spirit intact. I’m reading it with an energy drink in hand because, honestly, I need the caffeine just to keep up with how fast this town is growing. (Or at least that is the excuse I tell myself).

Class Act 🍎

R-VII schools just landed some massive wins in the 2026 Niche.com rankings. Our district is sitting at the number one spot in Jackson County and holds top five rankings statewide for both athletes and teachers. We talk about growing pains constantly, but it’s nice to see the foundation for our kids is still solid.

LSR-7 Journalism Excellence

Congratulations to the Lee’s Summit High School publications team – they just secured 27 awards at the state-level J-Day competition, proving our local students are some of the best skilled young journalists in Missouri.

Whistle Blown at LS West

The football program at Lee’s Summit West is in a rough spot after the district fired the head coach over residency violations. It’s a mess for the Titans, but the school is trying to fix the culture quickly to keep things fair on the field.

The Blue Box Arrives

Jackson County Public Health put a free health vending machine in the downtown parking garage. It’s called the Blue Box and it gives you 24/7 access to Narcan and first aid kits. It’s a smart move for public safety.

Bookshelf Buddies

A huge shoutout to all the volunteers who attended the Bookshelf Buddies breakfast this week! This program connects community members with our elementary students to foster a love for reading. Check out the event photos.

Local Spotlight: The Green Street Vintage Takeover

The Vintage Fair on Green Street is happening this afternoon, and it looks like the organizers are serious about turning the area into a temporary time capsule. The local Cultural Commission is even doing free appraisals. Most people call that “clutter,” but around here, it’s basically a guided tour of our shared history.

⏪ The LS Loop

City Council (The Budget Crunch)

The April 20 Finance and Budget Committee meeting was a wake-up call for anyone tracking the city’s wallet. The main drama involves the FY2027 General Fund, where massive public safety costs are colliding with a very lean tax structure. While public safety is the top priority, the committee is struggling to balance competitive union contracts with a fund that only sees 18 cents of every property tax dollar.

This budget crunch ties directly into the growing local frustration over tax incentives given to developers. Those deals might bring in new buildings, but they often leave the city with less revenue to handle the actual burden of rising operational costs. Beyond the personnel friction, the city is also shelling out significant cash for “behind the scenes” fixes. This includes up to $600,000 for Dell hardware and software replacements plus extra professional services to patch up Workday payroll system bugs. You can watch the full Budget and Finance committee meeting here to see where your tax dollars are going.

Do you think the city should start putting a cap on those developer incentives to help cover the public safety bill?

Roundabouts: Love ’em or Hate ’em? Construction just started on the $5 million Ward Road roundabout, and closures will last until June. Are you happy about the better traffic flow, or are you just tired of spinning in circles?

✍️ Help Me Shape the Lowdown

I started this newsletter to keep us all connected, but I want to make sure I’m hitting the topics that actually matter to you. What are we missing?

Is there a local business I should spotlight? A hidden gem trail? Or maybe a city issue that needs a deeper dive?

Too much news, or not enough? Let me know if you want more “hard news” from City Hall or more local upcoming event coverage. I personally love sharing all of the events and music happening around town. It is incredible how many activities our city offers!

Thanks for spending a few minutes of your morning with me! If you enjoyed this issue, forward it to a neighbor – it’s the best way to help us grow.

Thanks for being part of the Lowdown crew!
